In a move to streamline its border processes, the United Kingdom will require travelers from the United States, Canada, and Australia to obtain an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) starting January 8, 2025. This new system is part of the UK's ongoing efforts to fully digitize its borders by the end of 2025, enhancing both security and convenience for international visitors.
The UK ETA system, which has already been in place for travelers from Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries, will be expanded to include citizens of the US, Canada, and Australia in early 2025. In fact, the system is already live for non-European travelers, and the official application portal launched on November 27, 2024, is now accepting requests. Those planning to immigrate to the UK from these regions can submit their applications through the UK ETA mobile app or website.
Although most applications are processed within hours, travelers are encouraged to apply a few days in advance to ensure timely approval and avoid any last-minute delays. In some cases, approval may take up to 72 hours.
A Digital Travel Authorization: The ETA is not a traditional visa but a digital authorization linked to a traveler’s passport. This system allows for multiple entries during a two-year period or until the passport expires, with each stay limited to a maximum of six months.
Affordable and Simple: At a cost of just £10 (roughly $13), applying for the ETA is both cost-effective and straightforward. Travelers will need a valid passport, a digital photo, travel details, and an email address to complete their application. Payment can be made via debit or credit card.
Transit Passengers Included: Travelers who are simply transiting through the UK—even without leaving the airport—will also need to apply for an ETA. However, this aspect of the system is still under review and may evolve over time.
Phased Rollout: The UK ETA system has already been successfully adopted by travelers from GCC countries, with over 600,000 applications approved to date. Beginning January 8, 2025, citizens of the US, Canada, and Australia will also need an ETA. Later in 2025, on April 2, European travelers will also be required to obtain authorization for UK entry.
It is advisable to apply for the ETA well in advance of your planned travel date. While the majority of applications are processed quickly, it is always wise to give yourself a little extra time. Typically, travelers will receive approval within a few hours, though in some instances, the process may take up to 72 hours.
