Cases of migrants who cross the border illegally have decreased by more than 50% in comparison to December. The U.S. Border Patrol agents recorded an average of 3,700 migrants during 21 days of May. There has been a 54% decrease from the daily average of December’s illegal crossings. In the month December, 8,000 daily average was recorded due to high illegal entries in the US-Mexico border.
May is the third consecutive month, followed by March and April, that saw a drop in the unlawful border crossing. In March, illegal crossing dropped to 137,000 whereas in April, it took a much higher drop as the number reached 129,000. The U.S. Border Patrol agents don’t include migrants registered by the official border crossings.
According to the recent survey, the Biden administration is admitting 1,500 asylum seekers daily. They have also credited the Biden administration for the downward trend. The main reason for lower unlawful crossings is due to aggressive crackdown by the Mexican government on U.S.- bound migrants.
The Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas in an interview with CBS News stated that actions have been taken to build lawful pathways that help people to reach the US in a safe and legal way. Immigration has always been a top priority for the voters ahead in the Presidential elections. President Joe Biden has received criticism on the migrant crossings from two sides.
On one hand, the Republicans believed that U.S. immigrant policies are too lenient. On the other hand, the Progressives argued that Biden’s administration has drawn influence from Trump-era border policies. In conclusion, Mayorkas said, “ We keep looking at options to strengthen our border security.”
