Under the recent initiative announced by the government on Thursday, it is said that the new process aims at fastening the time to decide the fate of immigrants in the immigration court from years to around six months.
Immigrants who have just arrived in the country and are going to specific five cities have their cases seen by a selected group of judges, who decide the qualification of migrants within 180 days.
This marks a remarkable increase in the decision making process by the judges. While some cases overburdened the immigration system, i.e., four years. The new aim fastened the case resolution, and authorities can quickly remove immigrants who are not qualified enough to stay in the country.
The case resolution of the immigrants will be in some of the big destination cities like Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, and New York City, where the judges are available for case hearings.
At present, the arriving immigrants are in the country where they wait for the date of the asylum court process, which takes years.
It is also said by the Detractors that it is momentum for immigrants to come to America, as they know they can work in the country during their stay. The more immigrants stay in the US and establish families and community ties, more opposition there is to send them back to their home country.
The goal of this new immigration aim is to clarify to aspiring immigrants that they have to first clear their court cases before applying to immigrate to America.
According to the recent record, there are 3 million cases in the nation’s immigration court with around 600 judges.
The new plan announced on Thursday would not include money for more judges. However, an agreement was countersigned by President Joe Biden about the funding for new judges, which was later on discarded by Donald Trump, the GOP presidential nominee.
The government has tried for many years to reduce the time taken in the process of deporting immigrants who are not qualified to live in the country.
In 2022, the administration of Biden introduced a plan that asylum officers would decide the limited number of family claims in nine cities instead of the immigration judges.
